One known and common source for tear stains in pets is the method in which they drink water. Especially seen in our long-haired furry friends (both dogs and cats), drinking directly from their water bowl causes the muzzle/mouth to get wet, spreading the stains throughout the dog's/cat's face. Because drinking from the bowl is a normal, everyday routine, the stains spread continuously.
Constant moisture in the fur gives tearstain-causing bacteria a chance to reproduce and spread. While the brownish/red stains may start at the mouth of your pet, many owners find it isn’t long until the stains have advanced to the paws and eyes. This is because your pet's paws act as a courier for the bacteria (rubbing their muzzle with their paws and then transferring the bacteria to the eyes as well.)
